Swords from 1993- Present
Here are a number of examples of swords that I have made from the start of my career to the present- no stats are available for most of these swords as a most of my records from early in my career were lost to mishap.  These swords are presented in no particular order.  Enjoy!

Tinker Pearce Tactical TSS (2011-055-02)

Oakeshott Type: N/A
Overall Length:  21-7/8  inches
Blade Length: 16 inches
Blade width @ Base: 1-5/16inches
Blade Width (widest:) 1- 7/16 inches
Blade Thickness @ Base: .250 inch
Blade Thickness 3 inches from Point: .100 inch
Hilt Overall Length: 5-7/8 inches
Center of Gravity:2 inches from base of blade
Weight: 20 ounces
The challenges of designing a modern 'Tactical' sword are many;  It needs to be long enough to offer significant advantages of reach and cutting power and excellent utility, be a good weapon and yet be compact and light enough that it's convenient to carry.  It also needs to be made of proven materials that will withstand the rigors of a wide variety of conditions and use.
This TSS features a differentially-tempered 5160 spring steel blade ground with a slightly convex grind from the spine to the zero-ground cutting edge giving it superb cutting power- but don't take my word for it; check out this video: cutting video.  The Cocobolo wood handle is ergonomically shaped and the wood is quite stable and resistant to shrinkage,  cracking and impact.
The sword is currently provided with a very simple leather scabbard.  Avalaible options (at additional expense) include a protective Black Oxide coating, a 'field-grade' leather scabbard and G-10 handle scales.
This is the second sword of this model offerred for sale as indictaed by it's serial number.

Weight: 2lbs. 2 Oz.

Sword in the style of a Greek Kopis or early Roman Falcatta.  Based on a drawing in Richard Burton's "Book of the Sword."  The blade is 5160 spring steel and is differentially tempered to approx HRc58-60 st the cutting edge.  The spine and tang are drawn to HRc45-48.  The blade has a straight full-length distal taper making the sword very light and handy.  The tang is the full profile of the handle.  The grip scales are Cocobolo and are secured with 4 brass pins.  The handle works best for medium to very large hands.  The sword is provided with a  wooden scabbard that will be finished either with a clear-coat or Leather cover and with brass fittings at the customer's option.

This is the sort of sword that the Spartans might have really carried and fought with.  It is also likely to be an ancestor to the famous Ghurka Kukri and possibly the Norse Scramasax.  This modern interpretation of the classic design is very quick and agile in the hand and has excellent cutting power.  Would be an excellent combination tool and weapon for field use,  recreational cutting practice or even historic recreations.

Type XIII sword in the style of the late 12th through mid 14th C.   Blade is 5160 spring steel hardened to HRc58-60, then selectively drawn down to HRc45-48 through the  spine, shoulders and tang.  The tip of the blade is slightly rounded. The guards and pommel are 'keyed' on the recangular section of the tang to prevent rotation and are made from Mild Steel.  The handle is sandwiched hardwood with  risers at the top, bottom and center.  The handle is wrapped in real linen cord then covered in green Chrome-tanned leather.  The hilt is secured with a 5mm Allen sleeve nut threaded SAE 1/4-20 that is counter-sunk into the pommel so the hilt may be taken down for maintenance.

The "Gran Espee de Guerre" or " Great Sword of War" were a variety of (generally) two-handed swords designed to defeat chain-mail.  As such they tended to be quite long and relatively heavy with a flattened ovoid cross-section and a fuller running part of their length.  The heavy sword used with powerful two-handed blows could inflict significant blunt trauma through mail even if it should fail to shear through it.  Primarily a cutting sword the point is relatively blunt but still capable of thrusting against unarmored targets.

Primary Hilt Node: approx. 1/2 inch from cross on handle
Weight: 2lbs 9 oz

Type X sword in the style of the late Viking Era (approx 9th- early 10th C.)  Blade is 5160 spring steel hardened to HRc58-60, then selectively drawn down to HRc45-48 through the  spine, shoulders and tang.   5 lobed pommel and upper and lower guards are mild steel.  The Guard and Upper Guard are decorated with a simple vine motif used on similar hilt furniture in this era.  The hilt is mounted by passing a reduced section of the tang through the pommel and riveting the tang over the end of the pommel.  The guards and pommel are 'keyed' on the recangular section of the tang to prevent rotation.  The handle is sandwiched hardwood with three equally speced risers wrapped in real linen cord then covered in deep Burgandy leather.

Exceptional care was taken with the Geibig's Type 3 blade to insure that it conformed to average historic proportions of such blades and that the hilt, blade and decoration were all consistant with the period.  The handle is partly conjectural as very few handles of this period survive intact and those that do are generally clad in metal.  This handle does conform generally to the shape of those handles with allowances for the style of hilt furniture.

This sword's handling is wonderfull.  It doesn't feel as though it weighs more than 2 lbs!  The blade is quite flexible laterally but is quite rigid in the cut.   While some might characterize it as 'whippy' it is consistant with period examples and tracks very well through the cut.  The mono-tempered blade allows this sword to be offered at a somewhat lesser price than an equivelant differential tempered sword at a very reasonable $1200 US Sold

We cut with this sword over at The Lair today (6/16/07) and I gotta say- this thing is a BEAST.  Triple mats? Like Butter!  I had to look to see if I'd actually hit the mat to verify that I had cut it!  Everyone on the crew cut with this at one time or another and it cuts like madness- mats, triple mats, pop bottles- this thing is awesome!
This sword started life as a blade blank for a katana machined by Angus Trim for a joint project with another firm, but this one was surplus to need and Gus handed it over to me.  I needed a sword for today and I'd been down with a bug all week.  I didn't have time to finish any serious projects so I took an afternoon and reground the AT Kat into a TakCat for the party.  I gave the sword a broader primary bevel and a full 'zero-ground edge' with the convex bevels meeting at the edge in traditional katana style.  Then I ground the tip into an 'american tanto' style chisel tip so that it'd be tack-tic-kull and did a double layer para-cord wrap as shown.  Everyone agreed that the wrap provides an excellent yet non-abrasive grip.
The original blade was modelled on an antique, so handling is quite correct and the harmonic balance is excellent.  This will be a fantastic sword for forms practice, cutting practice or-dare I say it? Tactical use in a combat environment.  If the unquiet dead were to rise from their graves hungering for the flesh of the living this is the sword that I would reach for- serious zonbie-slayer here!
OK- all fun aside this blade is Marquenched 5160 spring steel mono-tempered to HRc52-54, excepting the tang which has been drawn back to HRc45-48.  The handle is wrapped in Desert Camo paracord with a black paracord overwrap that is counter-wrapped to enhance grip.  This sword is provided with a simple black leather scabbard reinforced at the throat and chape.

This sword is made from the base of a longer blade that broke- it was a stout longsword blade originally, but it was dropped and cracked before tempering.  The 16-1/4 inch long blade is differential tempered 5160 spring steel, HRc58-60 at the cutting edge with the spine, tang and base of the blade drawn to HRc45-48.  Furniture is of mild steel.  Handle is hand carved Cocobolo in a 'thornwood' pattern.  Hilt is dismountable.  The handle is long enough even for very large hands, but narrow enough that people with average sized hands will have no difficulty weilding it.This is a massive piece but it is so short that it remaines quite handy.  Cutting power is disproportionate to the swords size.  Sword is provided with a black leather scabbard with a reinforced throat and chape.

Longsword in the style of swords of the 15th C.  Don't let this sword's delicate looks fool you- this is a substantial sword!    It is ideally suited to the longsword techniques identified in the Italian and German texts of the period and is exceptionally rigid.  This is currently the swword that I use for demos and martial-arts forms.

This hilt is from an example at Leed's dated to 1590 but could be appropriate for any period from then to Culloden.  Excellent handling!  Inside of hilt is acid-etched finish, exterior is 'bright' finish.  This represents a common fighting man's weapon- cosmetics on the hilt are imperfect but consistant with period examples.  As are many hilts of this period the hilt is asymetrical and made for a right-handed person.

TYPE XII SWORD
Early Medieval Sword

Oakeshott Type: XII
OAL: 37-1/2 inches
Blade Length: 31-3/8 inches
Blade Width @ Base: 1-7/8 inches
Blade Width 3 inches from point: 1-1/4 inches
Blade thickness at base:  .236 inches
Blade thickness 1 inch from tip: .060
Distal taper is initially concave then becomes a straight taper
Hilt OAL: 6-1/4 inches
COG: 4-1/4 inches from Base of blade

This sword is in a style comparable to swords of the 11th-13th C. and is primarily a cutting sword, though the acute point will facilitate thrusts against unarmored opponents.  The sword is arguably a type Xa, but I feel that the acute point places it as a type XII despite the length of the fuller.

Viking sword in the style of the late 9th- early 10th century
I finished in the nick of time to deliver this peice  and lighting conditions weren't favorable to taking full-length shots unfortunately.  There are some pretty good pics of the hilt however.  Most of the 'crookedness' apparent in the photo is an artifacct of the picture. Enjoy!

This sword was prepared for the 'Masters of Fire- the International Exhibition of Contemporary Bladesmiths' at the Museum of Art in Macao.  It is in the style of swords of the 7th-8th century with contemporary decoration on the hilt and blade.

This 'Fantasy' Viking Bastardsword was completed for a customer this early winter.  33 inch differential tempered blade 2-1/4 inches wide at the base.

Photos courtesy of Jonathan Kleinheksel .   This  Viennese Backsword was created in about 1997 I believe and is a creature of my imagination- though the hilt is inspired by a late 16th/ early 17th C. Hanger from Vienna- yes, this three-fingered 'pistol grip' is period!  The handle is carved hardwood- I don't recall off-hand exactly which kind.  The furniture is brass. and the multi-pouch scabbard carries a long Bodkin behind the swords hilt.  I believe that the very attractive belt and suspension is by Edward Juleson.

Pictures courtesy of Lancelot Chan- this sword was manufactured shortly after the end of Tinkerblades Inc. and utilized some production components on an original blade.

A reader, Toh Kai Wee, sent in these pictures of a Tinkerblades Inc. 'production' sword- I don't remember the model number but Gus actually still has the program 'on file.'.  This dates to the period when Angus Trim was just starting to rough-machine blades and make the pommels on the CNC Lathe as part of Tinkerblades Inc.  I'm pretty sure that Gus still uses that pommel, too!  This sword was hand-finished by me, including hand forging the guard-blank to flare the ends and curve the ends of the guard forward, finish-grinding and polishing the blade and making the Cocobolo handle.

'Hyperborean Poniard'
Pic

A fellow a while back asked for my interpretation of a piece that a certain well-known barbarian picked up in his travels- referred to as a 'poniard' the description is quite vague, so here's my thought.   Blade Length 19 inches  Weight 1lb14oz  COG approx. 1-1/2 inches from the guard
Differential tempered 5160 spring steel, mild steel, Cocobolo and Linen Cord.

This tactical featured a
differential tempered 5160 blade 21 inches long and a hand-and-a-half hilt

Hopefully the owner of this sword will provide better pictures than I could get- this modern concept based on the medieval baselard made a very handy little sword!

This Type XVa Sword features a blade 3/8 inch thick at the base with a full-length convex distal taper.

Given the strong Viking contingent in the local SCA it's not surprising that variants of Oakeshott's Type X were quite common early in my career!
