I have read the book and let me tell you folks, it is a must for all
sword enthusiasts. From a makers point of view I found it quite
informative and detailed, though not too windy and fun to read. Alot of
stuff to soak in from Tinkers vast studies and years of making swords.
He spoke alot about why european swords work the way they do, from the
mechanics to the "feel" and why a good sword feels alive. There are
lots of examples of his work as well as many other contemporary makers.
These examples added to the context of each chapter. The swordsmanship
section was also tastfully done. Many pictures of Tinker actually
making swords in his shop, very cool! The best part to me is the WHY we
love swords and you can Feel the love he puts into them. It's all
there, construction methods, steels, heat treat, joy!
I think from a collectors point of view it is a work that should not be
missed. Alot of Tinkers ideas and theories about sword mechanics have
become household terminology and used throughout the sword community as
well as the industry. Many beginner sword collectors learned from
Tinker in SFI and have probably saved themselves thousands that would
have gone to SLO'S rather than real swords. Not to mention many folks
in the know, who go to Tinker for their swords.
We here, at SFI especially, have hashed alot of this stuff out through
the years with Tinker, but reading it in book form was alot more
enlightening. No bickering, just a mighty swordmaker talking about his
craft. I enjoyed it and I know you will too!

I just wanted
to say that this is a great book to have for any and all
of us who love swords and are always on the journey of learning more
about swords. It is a definite must have. The book covers everything
from the different typologies of Euro blades with great pictures from
noteable smiths like Vince Evans, John Lundemo, Tinker and companies
like Albion and others. The book also has a chapter on what is a sword,
what makes a sword good, Harmonic Balancing of which I really enjoyed.
So much to say. Just really happy for Tinker for finally getting his
book out there.

What
a great book. It is easy to read and has some tinkerisms (is that a
word?) thrown in. Great job Michael and I highly recommend that
everyone pick up a copy.
